The Basics: Who is Rocky Mountain Essential Oils

Based in Orem, Utah and running since 2004, Rocky Mountain Oils are one of the leading essential oil brands on the market. They offer a comprehensive line-up of the best essential oils for cleaning, wellness, skin care, body care, and aromatherapy. This means they are not only perfect for the seasoned oil lover but also for the beginner.

They offer a 90-day money back, no-hassle guarantee– which is huge. Most of the time, when you see that a company doesn’t offer a returns it’s a red-flag. What are other red flags? Cheap prices, lack of quality testing transparency, and poor selection. So let’s get into the specifics of Rocky Mountain Essential Oils.

Price

Rocky Mountain Essential Oils is a very approachable company from an economic perspective, with their essential oil prices falling mid-range compared to other companies.  I’d say just by looking at price alone, Rocky Mountain essential oils does a pretty good job at making their oils accessible. Let’s take a look at the most popular essential oils and see how they’re priced.

Lavender $25.95 for organic 15 mL*

Frankincense $35.95 for 15 mL*

Peppermint $16.95 for 15 mL* 25.95 for organic 15 mL*

Quality

Rocky Mountain goes almost above and beyond on their quality testing and purity standards. Or at least that’s what they say on their site. They send out their oils to an independent 3rd party quality testing lab. You can look up the test results of the exact batch/bottle that you bought. That kind of transparency just can’t be bought…actually it can- but do you want to?

Rocky Mountain is committed to crafting the highest quality essential oils. They provide GC/MS test results from a verified third-party lab for all single essential oils. These tests help verify the quality and purity that their customers are buying- which as a consumer is always a sigh of relief. Being able to trust the company you’re buying from is key. But here’s the thing, I’m going to go into their quality promises, but then I’m going to hit you with some disappointing news that recently surfaced, so keep reading.

Their essential oils also have a brand of S.A.A.F.E Promise:

Satisfaction: Rocky Mountain essential oils guarantees 100% satisfaction of their pure and potent products. If you ever have questions or need help, their A+ customer service is there to support you.

Authentic: All of Rocky Mountains raw materials are purchased from top trusted suppliers around the world. These suppliers are required to meet strict product guidelines.

Analysis: As I mentioned earlier, Rocky Mountain sends out all their single oils and bulk batches to run through GC/MS testing.

Free of Adulterants: Rocky Mountain guarantees their oils are free of adulterants by conducting their own internal analysis and then sending them out for third party testing.

But here’s the bad news, they didn’t hold themselves to this standard. Consumer Advocates sent out three of Rocky Mountain’s essential oils for testing and peppermint came back as adulterated with synthetic menthol and menthyl acetates. This is really important to note especially since they say they guarantee essential oils free of adulterants.

What I will say is that they really seem to be committed to correcting the testing issues uncovered by Consumers Advocate. This is a snapshot from the Consumers Advocate Facebook page where RMO commented on the report that their oils are adulterated:

Effective and Pure: Rocky Mountain essential oils promises that they will only sell oils that have been verified as PURE.

Chief Operations Officer at Rocky Mountain Essential Oils promises that they ensure the materials used for their products are always good and true- but this doesn’t seem to be the case with the Consumer Advocate’s results.

Selection

Currently, Rocky Mountain Essential Oils offers 77 single essential oils and 60 essential oil blends. That’s a pretty decent variety that can help you reach your goals. Some of the oils are certified fair trade, a lot are non-GMO, and 6 are organic- with more on the way!

I really love that Rocky Mountain offers easy starter kits. This is especially cool for beginners because you have everything all set up and ready for you without having to conduct tedious research. Kits include immune strength, tranquility, migraine support, and more!

Their site is easy to navigate with a pull-down menu pointing to specific goals, ailments, and product types.

Rocky Mountain Essential Oils Rating

Rocky Mountain’s essential oils and blends are tempting for consumers who want to buy from an affordable, educational company with a great selection. Though, after seeing the Consumer Advocates report of their peppermint oil showing synthetic menthol and menthyl acetate, their lack of quality and testing hurts their rating.

Rocky Mountain Essential Oils are for someone who has specific goals in mind and want convenience and support. With their site offering easy navigation to educational resources, specific goals, ailments, and kits- Rocky Mountain is perfect for the beginner.

Bottom Line: With Rocky Mountain Essential Oils, you’re getting great customer service from a company who is passionate about their product. We’re rating them a B. I love how easy their site is to navigate, they offer detailed information about their process,  sell at mid-range pricing, and offer a wide-variety.

While I would need more information on their quality and testing, Rocky Mountain Essential Oils is still a decently good company for me.  I need to see is more quality transparency and testing that lives up to their S.A.A.F.E promise.

  1. Dear Erica,

What a relieve post! I’m from Indonesia. For a person who’s been in love with EO and did research, it is an absolute overwhelming experience. Though, I refused to give up. Finally I settled down to RMO and has been using them for almost 2 years. Their oils areeee amazing and I feel right every time I use them. When I started to do research on the diffusers, I found Consumer Advocates website and was very very shocked and sad. I didn’t want to believe, but the site looked so promising. I searched the test result in the website but found nothing. Then I started to do further research, even I started to broaden my option. I think it’s time to make an EO benchmark on the product itself not the brand. But then I found your website and I’m sooo relieved! I would never find the RMO response regarding to the Consumer Advocates finding without your screenshot! I choose to buy it, because it always feels right. But, this journey brought me to the next level of choosing EO wisely, not to be too fanatic, but to be open minded. Thanks again, Erica! Have a wonderful day.

    1. You are so welcome! Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment. I am a researcher at heart. It’s what I absolutely love, so I’m glad that the work we’re doing over here is helpful for you. 🙂

  2. I bought two bottles of their peppermint essential oil about a year ago, does this mean Iam using dangerous chemicals on my skin?
I use two drops every night on my neck and chest to help me breathe clear.
And how are they processed are they processed using chemical solvents ,or are they cold processsed, I cannot find how they are processed on their website.
    Thank you, Sincerely, Laurel

    1. Hi Laurel! Not necessarily, but most likely you’re not getting the potent therapeutic benefits. Like we mentioned in the piece, they don’t let us know how they are processed and that’s why we gave them the rating that we did. Hope this helps!
