Are you ready for a new nighttime routine…one that fosters deep sleep and sweet dreams?  Today, we’re going to talk about four ways essential oils can help you get the beauty sleep you crave. There will be no more lying in bed, eyes wide open, worrying about tomorrow’s laundry list of to-do’s. To get the best beauty sleep you need to first know about the best essential oils for sleep.

Hitting the hay is supposed to feel good – not terrifying. Sleep is when your insides and outsides get to rest and reset so that you can wake up looking and feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. And what’s more beautiful than using all-natural plant tools to make that happen? Nothing.

So are you ready to learn your new 4-step nighttime routine with essential oils? Let’s do it.

1.Don’t Snooze on Skincare

Washing your face and taking care of your skin before bed is number one. We all do it, but not all of us make the most out of it. Using essential oils for your skin will take your nighttime regimen to the next level.

Our favorite essential oils for skin care will minimize wrinkles and pores, lock in moisture, tighten and even skin tone, and make your skin glow…overnight. Hence “beauty” sleep. Here are a couple of ways you can incorporate essential oils into your nighttime skincare routine.

*Remember: when creating DIY essential oil skincare recipes, always add them to a dark-colored glass bottle

Cleanser

For acne and active breakouts: add 36 drops of tea tree oil to the bottle. Fill the rest with a non-comedogenic carrier oil like jojoba, avocado, olive (no coconut oil)

For active breakouts and irritated skin: add 18 drops of tea tree oil and 18 drops of lavender to the bottle. Fill the rest of the bottle with a non-comedogenic carrier oil.

For irritated or inflamed skin: add 18 drops of lavender and 18 drops of frankincense. Fill the rest with a nourishing and healing carrier oil like fractionated coconut oil or jojoba.

To Use: pump your cleanser into your palm. Add 1-2 drops of the blend you created and gently massage and cleanse your face like you usually would. Be extra careful to avoid your eyes.

Honey-Lavender Facial Cleanser

This gentle face wash is perfect for all skin times. Remove your makeup first and then get to it!

  • ½ tsp. Raw honey
  • 1 drop lavender essential oil

Mix a penny-size of raw honey with lavender oil in your palm and then massage onto your face. Let the cleanser sit for 5-10 minutes and rinse with warm water.

Moisturizers and Serums

To smooth fine lines and wrinkles, even out skin tone, or calm skin, simply add a drop or two of a skin-loving essential oil (frankincense, neroli, rose, and lavender are the best!) to your favorite moisturizer or serum. Here is one of my favorite serum recipes below!

Lavender-Lemon Bedtime Serum for Puffy Eyes

This magical de-puffer will work wonders while you snooze. Lavender and cypress essential oils reduce swollen under-eye tissue while jojoba or almond oil locks in moisture to the delicate area. This recipe will make about 1 ounce of serum, so store in a dark-colored glass bottle in a cool, dark place!

  • 1-ounce almond or jojoba oil
  • 10 drops cypress essential oil
  • 10 drops lavender essential oil

Combine in a bottle and shake well. Gently dab under your eye area with your ring finger. Use nightly!

2. Tea time

After you’ve washed up, it’s time for a spot of tea. Instead of reaching for something unhealthy for a late-night snack, grab your book and blue light blockers, boil some hot water and sink into the couch.

Winding down before bed is a must to tell your body, “Hey, I’m slowing down and getting ready to catch some good z’s.” That means turning your phone on airplane mood, dimming the lights (maybe even lighting some candles), and having that quiet time to yourself to reflect on the day.

Pick your favorite herbal tea and add essential oils for sleep for those extra relaxation feels. Try one of these recipes below! Bonus: The added bit of raw honey will stop that late-night sweet tooth in its track!

Honey I’m Sleepy Tea

  • 6-8oz of boiling water
  • 1 bag of chamomile tea
  • ½ to 1 teaspoon of raw honey
  • 1-2 drops of lavender or roman chamomile essential oil

Instructions: mix honey and chosen essential oil together at first to combine. Add the tea bag to hot water and let it steep for 4 minutes. Add lavender honey mixture to tea and enjoy.

Ease-y Tummy Tea

  • 6-8oz of boiling water
  • 2 drops peppermint or ginger essential oil
  • 1 teaspoon of raw honey
  • Lemon slice (optional)

Instructions: mix peppermint or ginger essential oil and honey together. Add to boiling water. Squeeze lemon for a refreshing taste or an extra liver detox. Pour over ice for even more of a refreshment! This tea is perfect for calming an upset stomach or giving your digestive system some love after dinner.

3. Diffuse

A diffuser is one of the simplest ways to take advantage of essential oils for beauty sleep. Why? Well, because there are essential oils that are incredible at relaxing you, putting you in a deep sleep, and helping you stay in that sleep! The rest they foster will have you waking up refreshed and ready for the day, guaranteed.

Get a diffuser that will last you all night – at least 8 hours. To use a diffuser, all you have to do is add 4 to 6 drops of essential oil to the diffuser, fill it with water, and turn it on 30 minutes before bedtime so you can take advantage of the aromatherapy benefits all night.

If you don’t have a diffuser, try this easy linen spray and spray it on your sheets or pillow before bed for a relaxing aroma:

Linen Spray

  • Funnel (not 100% necessary, but it helps a lot!)
  • 2 oz. amber glass spray bottle
  • 10 drops lavender
  • 3 to 4 drops vetiver (optional)
  • 2 tsp. Of witch hazel
  • Distilled water

Add essential oils to the glass spray bottle. Using the funnel, add the witch hazel. Fill the rest of the bottle with distilled water. Shake well to combine and mist your room, linens, and pillow before bed.

4. Self Massage

Have you ever gotten a massage and fallen asleep or been pretty close to dozing off? Yeah, me too. I think most of us have. That’s why a little self-massage with essential oils before bed will do wonders for your beauty sleep. Try this or a version of this rub before you turn off the lights.

Sleepy Time Massage Rub (yields ½ cup)

  • ¼ cup unscented Shea Butter
  • ¼ cup Coconut oil
  • 20 drops lavender
  • 6 drops white fir
  • 6 drops cedarwood
  • 10 drops frankincense

Substitutions: you can replace any of the above oils with other relaxing oils like marjoram, ylang-ylang, roman chamomile, vetiver, cedarwood, or clary sage

Instructions: warm coconut oil and shea butter in a small pan until melted. Let rest on the counter for 10 minutes. Once cooled, add essential oils to the mixture and let cool in the fridge for 1 hour. Desired texture is firm, not hard. Whip on high with an electric mixer until softened peaks form. Apply a small, pea-sized amount and massage into feed before bed. Store in a cool place and save for future use!
