We’ve been coaching people in the health space for over a decade, so we know how important it is to have a strong foundation in good nutrition if you want to feel your best. Most health-conscious people pay a lot of attention to the food they eat, and rightfully so, but one area we’ve seen people consistently miss is the toxic kitchen items in their home.

You don’t want to undermine your healthy eating efforts by using toxic kitchen items. In this episode, we talk about the top 5 toxic kitchen items to swap ASAP.

#1 Non-Stick Pans

The coating used to create nonstick cookware contains PFOA and PTFE, which have links to heart disease, hormone disruption, cancer, elevated cholesterol, and other serious health issues. When heated, those chemicals break down and produce toxic fumes into the air you and family members breathe. If you use your nonstick pan regularly, the coating will start to peel and contaminate your food.

Instead: cast iron, stainless steel

#2 Plastic Food Storage

When plastic is heated, or the food is hot that you’re putting into plastic containers, plastic chemicals are leaching into the food you are eating. Phthalates and chemicals like BPA are endocrine disruptors and create hormone disruption inside the body. Endocrine disruptors have been linked to various cancers, insulin resistance, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer, asthma, liver damage, and even infertility (in both men and women).

Instead: glass food storage, stainless steel containers, stasher bags, bees wraps

#3 Plastic Cutting Boards

Not only are plastic cutting boards cheap and don’t last long, but they also contaminate our food. Toxins in plastic can leach into your foods when cutting them. Just look at the indentations!

Instead: untreated wooden cutting boards, glass cutting boards

#4 Slow Cookers

Glazes used in pots are often contaminated with lead and heavy metals, which end up leaching into our meals. Although lead is banned in the US, many of these slow cookers are from China or other countries where the regulations are much more lenient.

Instead: VitaClay, ceramic slow cookers, instant pot

#5 Water

70% of your body is made of water. By default, our water in America is toxic. We have so much crap in our water, like pharmaceuticals and toxins. Chemicals like fluoride have been put in our water supply to prevent tooth decay when, in fact, it doesn’t even prevent tooth decay.

Instead: filtration system, spring water, glacial water
