Entrepreneur, Supermom or Both? High Performance Has Many Faces

The High Octane Entrepreneur

It’s been a grueling day. You’ve spent hours with your executive team reviewing the leadership of your organization, compensation, bonus structures and making adjustments to your team’s roles and responsibilities.

Tough decisions were inevitable, but as the day comes to a close you feel confident about the work you’ve done and the trajectory of your business. You send your last email and close your laptop, more than ready to relieve the mental load and stress of the day.

As soon as you walk out of your office you’re enthusiastically greeted by little faces excited to share their day with you. It’s then that you remember you said today was going to be the day you start working out consistently. You’re met with a decision: Do I workout now or skip it?

TRUTH BOMB:

You’re
Already killing it!

If You Were More Consistent With Your Wellness Routine, You’d Be Unstoppable.

The Non-Stop Supermom

Or maybe your grueling day looks a bit different: You’ve spent at least 6 hours cleaning the kitchen (you swear you’ve washed the same cup at least 4 times), the Mt. Everest pile of laundry is now looking more like a small hill (win!), you have successfully answered 4,876 questions about what happened to the dinosaurs and somehow everyone is fed and mostly happy.

You’ve been on your feet most of the day and relish the opportunity to sink into the couch and breathe – at least for a moment while the kids are cheerfully playing with legos. It’s then that you realize it’s 5:30 and you have absolutely no plan for dinner because you forgot to unthaw the chicken. You’re met with a decision: Door dash (for the 3rd time this week…aaaand it’s only Wednesday) or throw something together and hope it’s decent? Guilt or stress?

Decision Fatigue is Killing Your Health Goals

Whether you’re running your own business or you’re running a busy household, every day you’re flooded with decisions.

While your power to choose can be a driving force to access the future you want, without your careful attention your choices can also be the undercurrent that keeps you stuck in patterns and habits you want to change.

It’s like swimming in an ocean. If you do nothing but tread water, you will inevitably drift wherever the current takes you. This is why intention, focus and clear direction are essential for achieving your health goals. One area to focus your attention is on health automation.

Eliminating unnecessary decision making in your daily routine – especially as it pertains to wellness – is a clutch move that will practically guarantee your success. In this article we’ll uncover how to do that and simple strategies you can adopt today so it’s easier to make your health goals a reality instead of a failed New Year’s Resolution.

Why Decisions Are An Obstacle for Entrepreneurs and High Performers

It’s no secret that our culture is drowning in information and by default we are inundated with decisions. Entrepreneurs and high performers are even more affected because they have greater levels of responsibility and are often the final decision makers.

Entrepreneurial work also requires an immense amount of creative energy needed for strategizing, problem solving, visioneering, organizing and processing information. The brain can be at full throttle most, if not all day.

I can’t tell you how many times Dr. Isaac and I have concluded an intense work day with a delayed realization of how much mental energy was spent working in our business or on our skills. We can feel tapped out, which isn’t uncommon for high performers – especially if you’re the type of person who’s always aiming for excellence.

Unfortunately, most people leave many of their most important wellness decisions to the end of the work day when they’re already spent. They decide what they’ll have for dinner, whether or not they’ll work out and how they will spend their evening when they’re tired and needing a break.

At this time, the loudest communication the body is receiving is to relieve the stress and tension from the day. Without focus and intention this leads to choosing the path of least resistance: cue the unhealthy comfort food, endless scrolling, vegging on the couch and staying up too late.

But pre-planned decisions – like making a healthy meal (or ordering one)  or choosing a workout in advance – increase the ease and likelihood of following through on the new behaviors and patterns you want to adopt.

What am I saying? The road to winning with wellness is named autopilot.

I don’t care if you’re a newbie or a seasoned health connoisseur. The way to success is to automate the right things as much as you can. The inverse is also true. The road to failure and loads of frustration is to overthink and make as many wellness decisions as possible at the worst possible times.

6 Ways to Automate Your Wellness for Maximum Impact

  • Batch Schedule Your Health Priorities by blocking them in your calendar. Once a month, set aside time for massages, your workouts, chiropractic visits, cryotherapy, facials, or whatever you feel is supportive to you. If you have an assistant this is a great task to delegate for high follow through.

  • Meal Plan for Mental Clarity so you are not making food decisions when you’re mentally depleted from the day. Simply jot down the meals you’ll make during the week and have the ingredients shopped by a service like Instacart so ingredients are at your fingertips when you need them.

  • Pre-plan Your Workouts so you’re not wasting energy figuring out if you should do HIIT or strength training. I routinely use a YouTube playlist of saved workouts that I like as well as a pilates app with pre-planned training I can do at home. It’s easy for me to get started in seconds.

  • Choose a “Sign-Off” Time each day to disengage. I’m typically out of the office daily by 4:30 to workout. I may respond to any final emails or slack messages between 5 and 5:30 pm, but I stop responding to all work communication shortly after that. Digital media (like podcasts or video) are wrapped by 7:00 and I enter into screen-free time for the rest of the evening. This is what aligns most for me, but you decide what works for you. The point is to decide

  • Fuel Your Day with Healthy Hydration by filling a large water bottle the night before. I like to add a pinch of sea salt or electrolytes for max hydration. A big bottle makes it easy to sip throughout the day without having to fill multiple glasses of water.

  • Get Your Supplements on Autoship or have a set plan to order regularly. I have a love-hate relationship with autoships because I somehow always end up with too much product. So I lean towards regularly ordering and I delegate this to my assistant once a quarter for less friction.

Conclusion

The name of the game is automation. The less you have to think about, the better.  This is the focal point of all health transformation. It’s creating consistency to the point that the healthiest decision becomes inevitable. This is when the choices become a seamless aspect of your lifestyle instead of conscious decisions that require mental energy. This result only comes through regular follow through over time.
