There is a potent antioxidant that’s been lying low for far too long. It’s called astaxanthin (pronounced “asta-zan-thin”), and it’s a powerhouse when it comes to all things beauty and skincare.

Also known as the king of carotenoids, astaxanthin is found in various foods, including salmon and red algae—which makes sense given its bright orange/red color. While astaxanthin can be used topically on the skin, taking the antioxidant in powder form internally can produce massive skincare benefits. Studies have even shown astaxanthin’s antioxidant properties to be way more potent than the popular skin-enhancing vitamins E and C. In this article, we’re diving into the health and beauty benefits of astaxanthin supplements and how you can add this must-have beauty ingredient to your skincare regimen.

Skincare and Beauty Benefits of Astaxanthin

We’ve heard it before, and we’ll hear it again: true beauty starts from the inside. You can buy tons of expensive topical products and slather them on in the correct 10 step order, but nothing will create true radiant beauty like nourishing your insides will.

UV Ray Protection and Repairs DNA damage

Astaxanthin has powerful UV ray protection properties when applied topically and taken internally. One randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study found that astaxanthin had a protective role in UV-induced skin deterioration of healthy people (1).

Because astaxanthin protects against UV rays, it also has benefits for those with DNA damage caused by sun damage. The same study aforementioned reported that astaxanthin helped improve the DNA repair capacity of cells exposed to UV radiation—meaning that it may also slow the growth of skin cancer cells!

Locks in Moisture

study that looked at the cosmetic benefits of astaxanthin on human subjects found that subjects who took a daily supplement of astaxanthin experienced improved moisture content and sebum oil level at the cheek zone.

As we get older, sebum production (natural oil production) down-regulates causing dry skin, aging, and a loss of that glow that makes us look youthful. Daily supplementation of astaxanthin means locked-in moisture for the dewey luminosity we crave.

Fights Free Radicals

Free radicals are those bad guys that cause oxidative damage and lead to aging. As a potent antioxidant, sometimes referred to as the “strongest antioxidant in nature,” it’s no wonder that astaxanthin fights free radicals brought on by environmental toxins and stressors.

Reduces Wrinkles and Fine Lines

As we’ve learned above, astaxanthin has been shown to neutralize free radical damage. It’s also been shown to soothe inflammation and improve the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines in aging skin. We can thank astaxanthin’s humectant, antioxidant, and nourishing properties for these benefits.

Protects against hyperpigmentation

Free radicals are again to blame for uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation. But fear not, because astaxanthin can neutralize and ward off free radical damage while repairing DNA damage due to UV rays.
